About the work
Karehagi (枯萩, withered hagi) names the dry, faded color of hagi — bush clover, one of the flowers of autumn — after its brightness has passed. Here the word reads less as a fixed hue than as a register: pale warmth, drawn down; a surface that seems already touched by time.
The chawan sits low and opens wide — a little over eleven centimeters across and under five tall. Matcha (抹茶) spreads thin across the interior, keeping the whole surface in view. It is a form made to be looked into.
About the artist
Yasumoto Kajihara (梶原靖元, b. 1962) was born in Saga and trained in Karatsu and Kyoto before establishing his own kiln in 1995. His work is rooted in the study of ko-garatsu (古唐津, old Karatsu), the Karatsu wares of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
He is known for rebuilding early Karatsu from the material up — grinding sandstone himself, selecting the finer particles, and studying old kiln sites in Japan and Korea. His work is shown at galleries including Kuroda Tōen in Tokyo.
Care
Rinse with warm water and dry on a soft cloth. Avoid soap, dishwasher, and prolonged soaking.
With use, the surface may slowly settle where the hand returns. Let it change at its own pace.
